COMPLEMENTARY DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography) is a test that allows the visualisation of the choroidal and retinal circulation without using contrast. It is used fundamentally in macular pathologies and has drastically reduced the need to carry out invasive tests (such as fluorescein angiography or indocyanine green angiography) in diseases as frequent as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration or venous occlusions.

This is a non-invasive imaging test that studies the structure of the retina and optic nerve. It is an excellent auxiliary diagnostic method for certain diseases affecting the eyes. It is used in the case of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, among others.

Angiography makes it possible to study the characteristics of the blood flow in the retinal vessels and choroid, to register details of the pigment epithelium and the retinal circulation and evaluate its functional integrity.

This examination is an important diagnostic aid in situations of retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, arterial and venous occlusions, among others, in inflammatory or degenerative situations of the retina and choroid such as age-related macular degeneration and retinal dystrophies, in the study of ocular tumours, in the study of the optic nerve and many other primary diseases, or not, of the eyeball.

When performing Angiography, one or more contrast products are administered intravenously, usually through the puncture of a vein in the arm or the back of the hand. The contrast product is non-toxic and highly fluorescent and can be safely administered to any patient after the hypothesis of allergy to the product has been ruled out. After the administration of the contrast product, several photographs are acquired through the angiograph, which allow a photographic record of the details of the eyeball and its vascularisation.

Its function is to reproduce our visual field through the projection of luminous stimuli in various locations and of different sizes and intensities.

The study of the Visual Fields is performed essentially to characterise diseases of the Retina, the Optic Nerve and the Optic Pathway - in other words, all the nerve pathways that conduct visual information from the Eye to the Occipital Cortex, the part of the brain responsible for vision. It has great importance in the diagnosis of Glaucoma since a disturbance of the visual field can be in some cases the first sign of the disease.

It consists of observing and recording various photographs of the retina, the optic nerve and the fundus of the eye. In this way, it is possible to monitor the evolution of lesions present in the eye, as well as the effectiveness of certain treatments.

Used as a complementary diagnostic exam in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, venous occlusions among others.

It consists in measuring the internal pressure of the eyeball or eye tension. The variations in intraocular pressure are related to the amount of aqueous humour (liquid located between the iris and the cornea), that is to say, these variations depend on the balance between the production and elimination of liquid. The internal ocular pressure should vary between 9mmHg and 21mmHg.

Photographic recording of the ocular fundus with barrier filter and excitation and without injecting contrast product. It is useful in the diagnosis of various diseases and their monitoring.
