Professor Rufino Silva from UC stands out on the "World's Top 2% Scientists" List

Professor Rufino Silva, from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), has achieved outstanding recognition on the international stage. The doctor and researcher was featured in the "World's Top 2% Scientists" list as one of the most cited scientists in 2022.

Professor Rufino Silva is a respected figure in the field of ophthalmology. In addition to his academic role, he leads the Medical Retina and Neurophthalmology Section at the Coimbra Hospital and University Center (CHUC). During the 2020-2021 biennium, he chaired the Portuguese Ophthalmology Society (SPO) and also held the position of vice-president in 2019-2020.

The data presented in this study, published by the prestigious Elsevier publishing house, is collected from Scopus, and considers the index, volume of publications and citations of scientists from all over the world. The data on citations over a period of one year refers to citations received during the calendar year 2022.

With a career marked by 172 publications in national and international scientific journals, and more than 4500 citations, his work covers a variety of topics, including Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy and Pathological Myopia.

He has also led national and international research projects, most notably as Principal Investigator at AIBILI (Association for Biomedical Research and Innovation in Light and Imaging) and iCBR (Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research at FMUC).

Professor Rufino Silva's inclusion in the "World's Top 2% Scientists" list is a testament to his global impact on ophthalmology and his valuable contribution to science.
